Motorcycle Muffler Repair: Noisier Is Not Faster.

After combustion, inside the engine, exhaust gases need to go somewhere. In motorcycles the gases are aimed out of the exhaust port and then on into the exhaust pipe. In case of four- stroke racers this pipe may be one long straight pipe or alternatively a shorter header pipe with a megaphone attached.

On modern motorcycles these exhaust pipes are generally in two parts (header pipe and muffler). Header pipes usually have double or triple walls. This is to ensure that the chrome plating on the external pipe does not get heated up and change colors.

The best approach is not to fiddle with the muffler unless it requires repairs. If only the muffler is rusted you can possibly attach a slip- on muffler and the pipe can be tuned to your engine. If you are able to locate a weak spot on the muffler or a hole, then it is best to braze or weld a piece of thick metal sheet as a patch. You can also use a type of muffler tape made of fiberglass that can be taped around the pipe to seal the hole. Though this looks very ugly and gross it is reasonably cheap and might last you through a riding season.

To summarize, as a Bottom line, you have three options ranging from cheap to expensive.

1. Replacement of muffler with stock parts.

2. Replacement of muffler with an aftermarket unit.

3. Fixing what you already have.

One thing that you can do is to seek advice from expert in this area to ensure that you will not lost opportunity to get the best deal and to ensure that quality of the parts is exactly match to your motorcycle model.
